HARRISBURG, PA -- Two more familiar faces will be back on the Island this summer. The City Islanders are happy to announce the return of Steve Fisher and Tim Velten to the 2009 roster, pending USL and USSF approval.
A native of Hershey PA, Fisher will be returning for his sixth season as an Islander. Fisher a graduate of Lehigh University, had an immediate impact on the City Islanders’ record books when he scored for the club’s first-ever goal on May 8, 2004. An important part of the City Islanders’ roster from its beginning, Fisher will look to continue his success through 2009.
After spending the 2008 season with USL’s First Division team Charleston Battery, Tim Velten will return to the Island in 2009. Velten was a key member of the 2007 championship backline. He played in over 1600 minutes and recorded one goal for the Islanders.
Before playing in the USL, Velten played for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he started all 39 games of his freshman and sophomore season. Velten then transferred to the University of Louisville, starting in 34 games during his junior and senior season there.
With preseason camp opening on March 16, Fisher and Velten will look to use their experience and talent to help lead the Islanders back to the playoffs in 2009.
Preseason camp will open in a little over two weeks and will be highlighted by a five match schedule beginning March 24 when the City Islanders travel to Hempfield High School to take on Bucknell University at 7:00 p.m. Three days later, on March 27, the team will head to Bethlehem to play Lehigh University.
The City Islanders will then return to Hempfield for three more matches against the Seattle Wolves (March 29), the University of Pennsylvania (April 5), and Towson University (April 10). The Seattle Wolves are the newest team to join USL's Premier Development League (PDL). Before their match against the City Islanders, they will play Crystal Palace Baltimore in Maryland.
With less than two months from the regular season opener against the Richmond Kickers, the Islanders' players are ready to be back on the field. The five match preseason schedule will prepare already signed players for the season, and give potential players a chance to show their skill in competition.
