PITTSBURGH, PA -- The Pittsburgh Riverhounds are hoping for some fireworks this Independence Day weekend when they host the Western Mass Pioneers in the United Soccer Leagues Second Division on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at Chartiers Valley Stadium.
The match pits the Hounds and Pioneers for the second time this season. The two sides tied 1-1 in New England on May 8th. Joseph Zewe opened the scoring for Pittsburgh a minute into the second half with Western Mass tallying the equalizer in the 64th via Jeff Deren. It was the second of the Riverhounds' four ties on the year.
Pittsburgh has played some solid soccer, but remains winless (0-8-4) in their return to the pitch after a year's hiatus to regroup under new owners.
LAST GAME: Under threatening skies, the Richmond Kickers scored three unanswered goals before the Riverhounds’ Justin Evans scored on a penalty kick after striker Travis MacKenzie was tackled inside the box in stoppage time. Pittsburgh had several excellent chances, but the Hounds just couldn’t convert. Still, the home side outshot the Kickers 18-12 in last Sunday’s loss.
Saturday also marks the Riverhounds first-ever Chili Cook-off.
The game will air live on WPIT-AM and live and archived on the Internet at www.msasports.net.
